Partnering With UNP, PT Sandvik Mining And Construction Holds The First Mining Technology Public Lecture In Sumatra

Padang – A monumental step in the world of education and the mining industry on the island of Sumatra was taken on Thursday (5/9), when the Department of Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) established a strategic partnership with PT Sandvik Mining & Construction. Located in the Multipurpose Room of the Faculty of Engineering, the event was attended by 327 students, as well as witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties.

Dean of FT UNP, Dr. Muhammad Anwar, S.Pd, M.T. in his speech, expressed his hope that this collaboration will not only stop at public lectures, but continue towards direct involvement of PT Sandvik in the university teaching team. “We hope that in the future, it will not only be a public lecture, but it can also be included in the teaching team,” said the Dean, full of optimism.

After the MoU signing, the agenda continued with the presentation of a plaque by the Dean of FT UNP to the Managing Director of PT Sandvik Mining & Construction Indonesia, Mr. Teguh Kurniawan, S.T., as a symbol of solid cooperation. In a moment full of warmth, both parties took pictures with the entire audience as a sign of the start of a new chapter in the world of mining education in Sumatra.

The public lecture session was divided into two, with the theme “Surface Mining” delivered by Mr. Agus Budi Syahputra as the first speaker. Accompanied by moderator Fariz Aditya, S.T., M.T., the speaker explained about the technological transformation applied in surface mining, providing valuable insights for students regarding the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly exploration and exploitation methods.

The second session was presented by Mr. Micah DE Simanjuntak, with the topic “Underground Mining” guided by moderator Ahmad Fadhly, S.T., M.T.. In this session, participants were invited to understand the complexity of underground mining, ranging from excavation methods, tunnel security, to advanced technology used to improve the efficiency of mining operations.

The public lecture ended with a lunch together, which also became a moment of friendship between students, lecturers, and representatives of PT Sandvik Mining & Construction. “We hope that in the future this collaboration will not only be a learning event, but will be able to create wider opportunities for students to go directly into the industrial world,” said the Dean in closing the event.

This collaboration is an important milestone in human resource development efforts in Sumatra, especially in facing global challenges in the mining industry. UNP and PT Sandvik agreed to continue to encourage innovation, research, and collaborative learning to produce graduates who are ready to face the technological revolution in the mining sector.

The event, which was attended by the Vice Deans I and II of the Faculty of Engineering, Deputy Director I of the Vocational School, and the Head of General Affairs of the FT, also became an important stage for educational and industrial collaboration in the mining sector, opening wider doors for students to learn firsthand the advanced technology in the mining world.
